Do you ever struggle with believing God will actually move? In our theme verse for Move of God, Habakkuk says that he’s heard the stories of God’s movement in the world. He cries out in faith, “Do it again!” (Habakkuk 3:2). Don’t you wish you had that kind of faith? Maybe you do, but I bet a lot of us often don’t. We’ve heard stories of God moving in the past and we here stories of God moving elsewhere in the present among other people doing other things. And we want God to move here, with us, but even as we ask him to. We struggle to really believe that he will.
Maybe you’ve felt this during our Move of God series. We’ve been crying out to God to move in our church, in our city, and in the world. Hopefully you’ve been crying out to him to move in your heart and in your home. And maybe you’ve been praying with true hope and faith that God will answer our prayers. But maybe you’ve found it hard to pray really believing that it will make a difference.
And then there’s the giving. Maybe you’ve committed to give to the Move of God offering and you did so believing God will use it. But maybe you doubt your giving actually makes a difference.
In Ephesians, Paul lays out for three chapters the gospel and how it transforms us. At the end of the third chapter he prays for God to move in and among the members of the people he’s writing to, and then he ends with this benediction:
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21)
Paul asks God to move and then says that he can do even more than what we can ever ask or imagine. He says God can do “immeasurably more".
Now theres a lot of things we can measure. We can measure how many cells are in the human body (37 Trillion). We can measure the number of grains of sand there are on earth (7.5 sextillion). We can measure a lot! But God can even more than we can measure?! But it’s not just more than we can measure. It’s what we can’t measure. God often moves in ways that we can’t pin down or explain. There are ways God moves that we can measure like Sunday attendance, people baptized, Communities started, etc. But much of what God does with our prayers and gifts we can’t measure and we can’t imagine.
So know this: whatever you’re asking God for, he can do more. Whatever you can imagine God doing, he can do immeasurably more.
And how does he do it? Notice what Paul says. He says God can do immeasurably more “according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20). God move through his people! That’s you and me! God can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine and he does it through us, including through our prayers and through our giving.
So what do you do with that information? You do what we’ve been saying this whole series. You say “YES”! To whatever God is calling you to, you put your “yes” on the table. You consecrate yourself and make yourself available to whatever God wants. Because God is able to do more with all of it than you ever could. More than you could ever even imagine.
